My first introduction to "feeding" was Fate/Grand Order, which was initially released in Japan in July of 2015 and brought in a total of $4 billion dollars around the world in 2019. In order to ensure that a character is the very best possible I had to purchase duplicates of D2R Items every character. And when a particular advertisement came along I was able to pay more than 300 euros to purchase the 5-star character I'd coveted for years. However, I wasn't able to get the copies I needed to fully appreciate this character's full potential. With rates for the most popular 5-star characters currently being around 1%, it was not a surprise that I failed to get a copy of the character during my time enjoying the game (which I've since removed). At the time of writing, Fate/Grand Order was the seventh highest grossing mobile game of all time. It was just behind Konami's Puzzle and Dragons, which also, I'm guessing, is also a gacha-based game.
In an GDC 2021 discussion, Genshin Impact developer Hoyoverse (previously Mihoyo) outright admitted that the process of creating characters was based on generating the most capital possible from its audiences. Its Raiden Shogun and Kokomi characters that were reruns in March 2022 alone earned the company more than $33 million in revenue.
The moment was immortalized in memes and mockery, much of which stemmed from disappointment of the audience: People attending BlizzCon 2018 were expecting "Diablo 2 Resurrected" announcements. But it also came from the stigma that still surrounds smartphone games that are popular in the West and the US, where the acceptance of smartphones as a gaming platform has been slower than in the other regions of the world.
Since it's launch, "Diablo 2 Resurrected " has gained a reputation boost, since alpha and beta tests proved the game was an intense, traditional Diablo experience. (It was also helpful that Blizzard has decided to bring its game onto PC.) This Diablo series is one of the most influential of modern game design, introducing games that focus on the acquisition of randomized "loot" to make your role-playing character more robust. "Diablo 2" it was recently remastered, cemented this loop. Likewise "Diablo 3," which Cheng was also working on, streamlined and evolved it.
The 2018 year was challenging for Cheng and the team, Cheng says it only strengthened their resolve to prove "Immortal" is a game worthy to be part of the Diablo series, since its mobile launch is free and opens the Diablo 2 Resurrected Items series to its largest possible audience to date. The game will be released on June 2.
