In the coming year Take-Two along with developer Visual Concepts are hoping to bring the game to a level playing field by providing ESPN Madden NFL 23 at the cost of $19.99. We questioned Take-Two's President Paul Eibeler and Visual Concepts the marketing director Steve Raab to explain the decision.
Paul Eibeler, CEO: We believe we could use price-based pricing to establish our brand. If the gamer who is an passionate sports enthusiast touches the product and sees the quality, we think that we'll have the best chance to be a major competitor in the sports industry.
The price of dropping to a low level is pretty rough medication.
Since competition is robust, we must make use of everything available, including products first, marketing dollars, branding followed by the value price.
And how much are going to depend on the cost to get the message across and how much do you base your marketing on?
We believe that price is a major factor when it comes to purchasing. We're trying to compete on the basis of product first. We have a fantastic spokesperson for the sport, Terrell Owens and we're currently developing spokespeople for other games in the sports. We've been working extremely close in conjunction with Visual Concepts on all the positions of the TV and print advertisements. We'll release them shortly...we're extremely excited about them.
What can you do to ensure that an increase in price impact the production value of your game?
We're not letting the quality of the game be compromised or hurt from any manner. We're a formidable competition, so we're doing things to improve this great game. We'll keep investing and Visual Concept and the Visual Concept guys are very determined to make it the best product available in the market. Only way for us to win is to be able to compete against a great products.
From your point of view... What does value pricing communicate to the consumer? What can your research reveal to you?
Our research shows that we're competing against an established rival. Pricing is utilized across all industries to convince people to purchase something that they wouldn't normally purchase. We're always making use of value pricing since, firstly, we are confident that we've got a fantastic product, and, secondly we're promoting that product through a full marketing and print campaigns, and not just relying on pricing alone. We believe that at this time in the cycle there's many casual gamers who will be expanding the category of sports, and that value pricing is likely to be more significant or even more important to the casual gamer.
Are you concerned about players not believing in the game due to price by itself?
If we did not have the quality of our product and did not have the support of all the editors who write regarding the products, Madden 23 coins then would have been.
